Teaching Philosophy

Teaching is more than imparting knowledge; it is inspiring change. Learning is more than absorbing facts; it is acquiring understanding.
- William Arthur Ward
At the core of my teaching philosophy is the belief that all people have the right to a high-quality education. The knowledge and skills students obtain from their education will open up opportunities for them throughout their lives-at any age. I believe teachers and students learn from each other through the mutual sharing of experiences and knowledge.
I desire to be a conduit between my students and the liberal arts; likewise, I know I will learn from my students' life experiences and unique perspectives. Although I am a visual learner, I recognize there are many learning styles. I design my curriculum to attract various styles of learning, allowing students the opportunity to engage with material in a multimedia and multi-sensory capacity whenever possible. Creating a positive learning environment with my students is essential. I have found that with positive reinforcement, students will take the intellectual risks necessary for self-discovery and growth.
My teaching style is based in student-centered learning. Asking open-ended questions, providing students with choices for assignments and projects, and encouraging students to incorporate ideas from their own background and culture provide students with agency and confidence. When the learning experience resonates with a student, it becomes a part of them, and they have the ability to share their newly gained knowledge as a teacher themselves.
I truly believe learning goes beyond a lesson or a class- it is a thread in the fabric of our lives and brings us together as a society. My goal is to be impactful by creating an inclusive environment where all students feel welcomed so they may be free to engage knowing they are supported in their learning.
